PALM, SPRINGS, CA — The Palm Springs POWER finished off a three-game sweep of the San Francisco Seals on Sunday night, winning their fifth consecutive game, 11-3. Offensive domination was the story the entire series for Palm Springs, and the same headline prevailed on Sunday as the POWER moved to 17-3 on the season.
The Seals jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first, but the POWER promptly countered in the bottom of the inning. David Kiriakos (JR, Riverside City College) led off with a hit-by-pitch, and he scored on an RBI double by Hank Yates (JR, undecided).
In the bottom of the second, Palm Springs began to capitalize. After Seals pitcher Spencer Wood loaded the bases, Carney Chamberlain (SO, Contra Costa College) hit a monster bases-clearing triple. Chamberlain came around to score later in the inning to put the POWER up 5-1.
The POWER continued to add more runs in the bottom of the third. Curtis Gomez (SO, University of the Pacific) recorded the first hit of the inning with a single, and Donald Glover (SO, Western Nevada College) hit him in on an RBI triple. Kiriakos followed with an RBI single scoring Glover, extending the POWER lead to 7-1.
Austin Barrett (SO, Mercer University) led off the bottom of the sixth with a deep home run to centerfield for his first long ball of the season. Ryan Garvey (FR, University of Southern California) followed with a mammoth triple and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Kenny Sigman (JR, South Mountain Community College). Gomez hit a double later in the inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Glover, making the score 11-1 in favor of the hometown team. San Francisco scored two runs in the top of the seventh, but the late-game rally would not be enough for the victory as the POWER won their fifth consecutive game.
Chris Licon (JR, Vanguard University) started his first game at pitcher for Palm Springs and threw effectively, allowing only one run on one hit through five innings of work to earn his first win. Jose Garcia (SO, College of the Desert), Sean Becker (JR, California State Unviersity, San Marcos), and Tony Guerra (JR, California State University, San Bernardino) all pitched phenomenally in relief to cap off a successful night for the POWER on both offense and defense.
Palm Springs looks to extend their winning streak to six games when they take on the East LA Dodgers at Palm Springs Stadium at 7:05 pm on Tuesday night on $1 Draft Beer Night. Gates will open at 6:00 p.m. All POWER games can be heard live on www.PSPBB.com, with select games simulcast on NewsTalk 920 KPSI Palm Springs.
