Another day, three more draft picks. After seven different POWER alums were selected in the first two days of the MLB draft, two more were selected on Day 3, along with current POWER right-hander Alan Garcia, who won yesterday’s game versus Team San Diego.
C Sharif Othman, who spent both ’08 and ’09 with the POWER, had his name called by the Florida Marlins in round number 32.
RHP Andrew Madrigal was picked up by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 35th round of the draft. Madrigal is the second member of the 2009 POWER team to be picked by John Mozeliak and the rest of the Cardinals front office. With Madrigal’s selection, seven members of that ’09 championship squad have been picked in this year’s draft.
The final POWER player picked in the draft was the aforementioned Alan Garcia. The San Francisco Giants, who also picked up POWER alum Garrett Buechele, selected Garcia in the 40th round. The Easter Arizona righty started last night’s game, striking out 5 over 3.1 innings. With great movement on his pitches, Garcia made Team San Diego’s hitters look foolish as they swung and missed, four of those times for strike three.
All in all, ten POWER players were drafted over the course of the past three days, setting an all-time record for Palm Springs’ hometown team in the draft, topping last year’s total of eight.
