Estevan Valencia
Field Manager

Estevan Valencia is starting his fourth season as the manager for the Palm Springs POWER.  In 2007, Coach Valencia led the POWER through another impressive season with a 37-11 record and an SCC league Championship. His overall record with the POWER is 101-35 after three seasons. After a very successful 2007 season, Coach Valencia ’s expectations are even higher for the 2008 team since the POWER will be returning twelve players from 2007. That is the most we have ever had return, in addition to having all five coaches from last season also returning.

Valencia has just completed his Third year as the Head Baseball Coach for Redlands High School .  Prior to that, he was a five year Assistant Coach at U.C. Riverside and the top Assistant Coach at Cal State Hayward. In the summer collegiate ranks, Valencia was the first ever manager of the La Crosse Loggers of the Northwoods League. In two seasons, Valencia guided the Loggers to their first ever Playoff appearance and managed the Southern Division All-Star team to a 12-0 win over the Northern Division in 2004.  Estevan and his wife, Pamela, have three children, Jacob, Adam and Lucy, and reside in Banning, California.

Herb Claggett
Assistant Coach

Herb Claggett returns for his third season with the POWER. Claggett’s responsibilities include working with all hitters, outfielders and catchers.

When not working for the POWER, Claggett is an Assistant Baseball Coach at College of the Desert.  Previously Claggett was the Head Baseball Coach at Palm Springs High School, Assistant Baseball Coach at University of California, Riverside, Head Baseball Coach at College of the Desert, and Head Baseball Coach at Mt. San Jacinto Junior College.  Claggett lives here in Palm Springs with his wife Margaret.

Earl Smith
Assistant Coach

Smith returns for his fourth season with the POWER organization and his second as an assistant coach.  Smith has been the Head Baseball Coach at Cathedral City High for the past three years where he was the DVL Coach of the year in 2005 and 2006.  Smith played college baseball at Castletown State University in Vermont.  Currently he lives in Cathedral City with his wife, Suzie, and daughter, Paige.

Javier Mejia
Pitching Coach

Mejia is back for his third season as the POWER pitching coach.  In 2006, he guided the POWER pitching staff to a team ERA of 2.51, which is by far the lowest in POWER history by almost a full run. Mejia is a graduate of the University of Southern California where he was a standout pitcher, and played three seasons in the Philadelphia Phillies organization.  He lives in La Quinta with his wife Jennifer and two daughters Stephanie & Alexi.

Jason Hawkins
Assistant Coach

Hawkins returns for his second season with the POWER.  Currently, he is an Assistant Coach at Redlands University and prior to that he was the Head Baseball Coach at Desert Hot Springs for five years.  He hopes his experience will help him to someday become a College Head Coach and he prides himself in the face that he drove to three different baseball games in three different time zones over the span of three days.
