Here at Palm Springs Stadium, we pride ourselves on the festive, family-fun atmosphere created at every game. We always encourage families to bring out the whole gang, no matter their age. We’ve got all sorts of fun activities for kids throughout the game from mid-inning promotions like the Race to Recycle to the Bounce House in the stands down the 3rd base line. POWER players like Frankie Torres and Nick Baker grew up attending our games, and we hope some of today’s fans will hit, pitch, run, throw, and slide in POWER uniforms one day too.

Annual Youth Clinic

Every year the POWER host a three-day camp for local kids where they get the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of baseball along with the skills, and sportsmanship need to succeed in life and baseball from the POWER coaches and star players themselves! The 2011 Youth Clinic was held from June 14th-16th. For more information on the annual POWER youth camp, call (760) 778-4487.

PALM SPRINGS, CA — The 41-4 Palm Springs POWER finished the season ranked 16th in the nation in the Summer Collegiate Team Rankings, up from their previous rankings, according to Perfect Game USA, the recognized leader in high school and college level scouting and ranking.

The POWER finished with the highest winning percentage (91%) in the final top 50. This year’s spot for the POWER marks their highest spot ever in the Perfect Game Collegiate Summer League rankings. Palm Springs finished just outside the Top 30 in the 2010, but the POWER caught the nation’s attention from the outset of the 2011 season.

Building off of last year’s success, the POWER spent most of the early season just outside the Perfect Game Top 25. On July 7, 2011, Palm Springs cracked the Top 25 for the first time in 2011, in the midst of their franchise-record setting 20-straight victories.

From there, the POWER quickly shot up the rankings, sliding up to 18th the next week before finishing the season just outside the top 15 at 16th.

The POWER season was highlighted by an SCCBL Championship, but the POWER also pulled off victories over the Casa Grande Cotton Kings, the champions of the Arizona Collegiate Wood Bat League, the San Diego Force, the champions of the Western Baseball Association(Orange/LA/Riverside/San Diego Counties), and the Orange County Waves, the champions of the Orange County Collegiate League.

The POWER look to build off of their 2011 success with an exciting 2012 season next summer! Until then, don’t forget about the California Winter League–your best chance to catch elite baseball in the Coachella Valley until the POWER return to the diamond next June. Until then, be sure to follow the POWER on Facebook and Twitter!

The Palm Springs POWER wrapped up the most successful season in team history last week, finishing 41-4 and bringing home a league championship.

After three games, the team actually had a losing record of 1-2. From there, however, there was no looking back as POWER players broke numerous team records and steamrolled conference opponents.

On the very last day of the season, catcher Alex DeLeon (JR, University of Kansas) set a single-season club record in dramatic fashion, knocking out his 11th double of the year to drive in the winning run for the POWER that night.

All-Star Nick Baker had a lights-out season for the POWER, and has signed to return next summer.

On the mound, starter Nick Baker (SO, Chico State University) led the POWER in wins at 10-0. Those 10 wins set a single-season record for Palm Springs. Reliever Ryan Santhon (JR, Cal State Los Angeles) set a single-season pitching record of his own, racking up 65 strikeouts in 43.1 innings of work.

Many other POWER players put up impressive numbers as well. Infielder David Kiriakos (JR, Vanguard University) sported a .570 on-base percentage to lead the team. Team captain Marcus Romero (SR, Southern Utah University) led the POWER in runs scored (45), total bases (65), stolen bases (18, in 20 attempts), total starts, at bats, and plate appearances. First baseman – and winner of the end-of-season Fan Favorite Award – Ryan Jones (JR, Vanguard University) led the team with a .422 batting average.

Closer Tony Guerra had some jaw-dropping numbers, like a team-leading 0.38 ERA and a .122 opponents’ batting average. Guerra only allowed 10 hits, three walks, and two runs. He never allowed an extra-base hit. All those numbers were the best among POWER players.

As a team, the POWER outscored opponents 368-128 and were perfect in day games (4-0) and on the road (5-0). They wrapped up the season by sweeping the So Cal Athletics for their third SCCBL championship.

The POWER show no signs of slowing down next season, with seven players already signed for 2012. Baker, Santhon, Kiriakos, and Jones are all coming back, along with right fielder Frankie Torres (JR, Vanguard University), pitcher Scott Simmons (JR, Vanguard University), and catcher Carney Chamberlain (SO, Contra Costa College).

PALM SPRINGS, CA — The Southern California Collegiate Baseball League beat the All-Stars from The Orange County Collegiate League on Saturday, 3-2, in walk-off fashion from a solo home run from Ryan Jones (Palm Springs POWER) in the bottom of the tenth inning.

The SCCBL/OCCL Home Run Derby dazzled the fans before the game, and Ryan Garvey’s (Palm Springs POWER) record-setting 10 derby home runs set the tone for the early innings. The OCCL All-Stars scored twice in the first half inning off of ten-game winner Nick Baker (Palm Springs POWER) on a two-run home run from OCCL MVP Scott Stidham (OC Waves). Palm Springs POWER second basemen David Kiriakos came around to score after a walk, a stolen base, a wild pitch, and a ground out from Joel Licon, the starting shortstop from the So Cal Athletics.

Ryan Garvey hit a record 10 home runs in the derby

The SCCBL scored another in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly to center by Marcus Romero, scoring his POWER teammate David Kiriakos, his second run of the ballgame.

Then zeros. A lot of them. No runs scored in the fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth for either squad. Both teams’ pitchers silenced the bats, with particularly impressive performances from SCCBL pitchers Taylor Fallon (Inland Empire Aces: 1.0 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB), Ryan Santhon (Palm Springs POWER: 2.0 IP, 0R, 3K, 0H, 0BB) and OCCL All-Stars Marcus Garrett (OC Waves: 1.0 IP, 0R, 1H, 3K), Zach Varela (Elsinore Heat: 1.0 IP, 0R, 0H, 2K, double-play), and Scott Brattuet (Metro LA Dodgers: 1.0 IP, 0R, 0H, 2K).

In the bottom of the tenth, Ryan Jones, who played the whole game as the designated hitter, lead off and took a 2-2 pitch to deep right field for a huge walk-off bomb, the first walk-off hit of the POWER for the season and the first of Jones’ career. “The first base coach from the Thrashers told me to get a hold of one, to hit one for him–just to end the game. I was just looking for that pitch, and I got it,” said Jones in an interview after the ballgame. His first career walk-off homer ended an incredible season for the POWER first baseman, who described 2011 as a “summer that changed my life.” Vanguard University will be lucky to have Jones, along with four other POWER players: Hank Yates, David Kiriakos, Frankie Torres, Scott Simmons.

The All-Star game was a thrilling conclusion to an incredible season here in Palm Springs. The Palm Springs POWER went 41-4, finishing the regular season as SCCBL regular season champs and beating the So Cal Athletics for the outright crown of the league. It was the POWER’s third SCCBL championship, the third in five years for the club.

Thanks to all the SCCBL, OCCL, and POWER fans for their support this season here in Palm Springs. Have a great fall and winter and we will see you out here for the ninth season next season!

PALM SPRINGS, CA – The OC Waves, who won their league championship on a two-run walk-off home run last night in Irvine, played a back-and-forth contest with the SCCBL Champion Palm Springs POWER and fell just short, 8-7, as the POWER won their 41st game of the summer.

On “Christmas in July” night at the stadium, fans received quite a gift from the POWER players. With a handful of players already gone due to previous schedule commitments, the rest of the squad stepped up their game, while having fun in the process.

Chett Zeise (SR, University of Iowa), co-captain of the team, started the game on the mound but walked the only batter he faced. Rob Ross (SR, Vanguard University), who was at first, traded places with Zeise. Zeise continued to play every position on the field throughout the ballgame.

Chett Zeise rips a double in the third inning. Zeise appeared at every position in the field in Friday night's game against the OC Waves.

The Waves scored one in the first and three in the third to take a four-run lead. Palm Springs, who has shown resilience many times this season, plated two in the bottom of the third, one in the fourth, and three more in the fifth to take a 6-5 lead.

But that lead was quickly erased in the top of the sixth, when Waves pinch-hitter Nick Garza tripled in Dylan Fitzgerald and then scored on an Ian Sakry RBI-single to give Orange County the 7-6 advantage.

One of the highlights of the evening also occurred in that frame, when POWER assistant coach and all-time franchise leader in hits P.J. Jimenez, who entered the game as a pinch hitter and stayed in to play second base, started a double-play with Zack Haley (SR, Liberty University), who currently attends Jimenez’s alma mater, Liberty University.

Alex DeLeon (JR, University of Kansas) gave the POWER the lead for good in the seventh, when he drove a ball into the left-center gap to score both Ryan Jones (JR, Vanguard University) and Jose Garcia (SO, College of the Desert). De Leon’s double was his franchise-record 11th double of the year, which put Palm Springs ahead 8-7.

Ryan Santhon (JR, Cal State Los Angeles) extended his single-season strikeout record with four K’s in his two innings of relief (he now has 65), and Tony Guerra (JR, Cal State San Bernardino) pitched the ninth to record his ninth save of the year, breaking the previous POWER single-season mark of eight set by Bryan Shaw in 2006. Shaw is currently a reliever for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

With the tying run at third and the go ahead run at second base for the Waves, Jimenez stayed with a tricky bounce on a ground ball to second and relayed it to first for the final out. The win, the 41st of the season, extending the new franchise record for victories in a season.

The Home Run Derby and All-Star Game between the Orange County Collegiate League and the Southern California Collegiate Baseball League will take place Saturday evening at Palm Springs Stadium, starting at 6 p.m. Both events can be heard live on www.PSPBB.com.
