Power To Host 5th Annual Golf Tournament May 2 at Indian Canyons

The Palm Spring Power will be hosting its fifth annual golf tournament to raise money for the Palm Springs Power Foundation and Palm Springs USO. This annual event will be held Friday, May 2 at the Indian Canyons Golf Resort with a noon shotgun start..

The purpose of this event is to raise funds to provide food, transportation and housing throughout the summer season. This year the event will also raise money for Palm Springs USO, which assists active and retired members of the military and their families as they travel through Palm Springs International Airport.

“This tournament is always a lot of fun as Indian Canyons is one of the most beautiful courses in the desert,” says Andrew Starke, President of the Palm Springs Power Baseball Club. “With Bud Girls passing out free drinks, 2008 is sure to be our best tournament yet.

PALM SPRINGS POWER NATIONAL ANTHEM TRYOUTS at Palm Springs Stadium on April 5th at 1:00pm

The Palm Springs POWER Baseball Club is gearing up for their fifth season as the Coachella Valley’s hometown team. Part of the preparations involves finding the Valley’s best National Anthem performers to kick off each of the POWER’s thirty-three home games. Try-outs to perform the National Anthem at a POWER Baseball game will be held at Palm Springs Stadium on Saturday, April 5th at 1:00pm. Palm Springs Stadium is located at 1901 East Baristo Road in Palm Springs. The stadium shares the parking lot with the Palm Springs library.

This year the POWER are looking for instrumentalists as well as singers to tryout either solo or as part of a group. Tryouts, as well as game night performances will be a cappella (without music). Available dates to perform run from May 30th to July 26th.  Applications are due by March 31st and there is no cost to try-out.

Opening night performer, Joey English stated, “I am excited about the opportunity to honor our country in this way. It is important to be able to give the National Anthem the respect it deserves and I couldn’t be happier than to lead the way this season”

Palm Springs POWER Baseball’s 2008 opening day will be against the Palm Springs Chill on Friday, May 30 with a 7:05pm game time.

POWER Fans and Rocky Make a Difference

On Saturday, December 22 the CHP, Desert Cities Young Marines, KPLM 106.1 with Randy Houston, Toys For Tots, and Palm Springs Motors held a toy drive to benefit young patients at JFK Memorial Hospital.

As you can see, Rocky the Ram Showed up with dozens and dozens of toys collected from this years Christmas in July game. All these toys were donated by our wonderful POWER fans. POWER Baseball thanks all of these fans and all the lovely people who donated to this wonderful cause. MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The POWER was well represented in the first Century 21 Mirage All-Star Game on July 18th with participation from 13 players.  Wes Oberlin and Ryan Wheeler started the night off by partaking in the Home Run Derby.  Oberlin blasted two home runs off of the batter’s eye in dead center field and Wheeler belted a moon-shot over the right field wall.  Trevor York started the game for the East All-Stars and was followed by Alan Gatz, Michal Leal, Jared Miller and Kevin Bissell in relief.  Kent Walton started in center field and singled in the East’s only run in the bottom of the 1st.  Mike O’Neill led the POWER with two hits after he replaced Walton in the top of the 2nd.  Congratulations to all of the POWER players who were nominated and played in the first Century 21 Mirage All-Star Game.

Small Business of the Year Award

Friday night the Palm Springs POWER Baseball Club received the “Small Business of the Year” award from the Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce.  The POWER would like to thank the community for their outstanding support over the past four seasons as this would not be possible without them as well as the dedicated staff of the POWER.

Seven Former POWER Players Get Drafted

Seven ex-POWER players were selected in the 2007 MLB Draft.  2005 POWER pitcher James Simmons, from University of California Riverside, was picked in the first round and 26th overall by the Oakland Athletics.  Left-handed pitcher Chris Siegfried, University of Portland, was drafted in the 11th round by the Chicago Cubs.  Chris pitched for the POWER in 2006 and 2007.  Brian Letko, who played for the POWER in 2005, was chosen by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 19th Round.  Letko attended Embry-Riddle University in Flordia.  In the 21st round the Tampa Bay Devil Rays picked 2004 POWER player Kevin Brophy from UCLA.  The Washington National drafted 2005 POWER player Aaron Seuss, from California Baptist University, in the 27th round.  2004 POWER player Kurt Crowell, from Cal State Los Angeles, was picked in the 38th round by the Milwaukee Brewers.  Also in the 38th round the Cincinnati Reds selected 2006 POWER player Ari Ronick from University of Portland.  The POWER organization congratulates all of the players and best of luck in the future.


The Palm Springs POWER organization would like to congratulate former POWER pitcher Donald James Simmons for being selected in this years MLB Draft

Earlier today, James Simmons was drafted in the 1st round of the 2007 MLB draft with the 26th overall pick by the Oakland A’s.  James, who just finished his junior year at the University of California Riverside, was the number one starting pitcher for the POWER in 2005.  He posted a 2.75 ERA in 39.1 innings and while striking out 47.  Simmons still holds the POWER record with the best strikeout to walk ratio in a season of 9.4 strikeouts to one walk.  The POWER organization sends their utmost regards and wishes the best of luck to James.
