Baseball players and brain surgeons normally don’t have anything in common, but in Michael Joannides’ case baseball and brains go hand-in-hand. The third year right-handed pitching veteran is a Neuroscience major and an Economics minor at Pitzer College. Someday, number 7 would like to be a brain surgeon instead of cluttering the minds of opposing hitters that he has been facing, striking out 14 in 13 1/3 innings while holding opposing teams to a .167 batting average. Joannides, also known as Joe in the locker room and Minnesota around the Pitzer campus since he hails from Minnesota, is not only pitching on the hill this summer, he is also studying for the MCAT’s Monday, Wednesday and Friday at UC Riverside. Minnesota is an all-around athlete including golf, tennis, football and bowling. When Joannides has free time he is likely to be found at the beach, at Twins games or watching “Arrested Development” or “Rob & Big”.
